Halocarbon Products Doubles HFIP Production, Showcases Innovative Customer-Driven Technical Advances
River Edge, NJ – October 2, 2007 – Halocarbon Products Corporation, a leading world-wide producer of specialty fluorochemicals, has doubled its production of HFIP and is now manufacturing commercial quantities of difluoro compounds.
Halocarbon has responded to a rise in customer demand for HFIP (hexafluoroisopropanol) by doubling its manufacturing capacity. HFIP is an acidic alcohol and due to its strong hydrogen bonding properties can be used as a solvent for many different kinds of polymers and solution phase peptide chemistry. It is also used as an intermediate to prepare pharmaceuticals and for the preparation of fluorinated esters of polyacrylate and polymethylacrylate polymers.HFIP is best known for its use as a raw material in the preparation of the inhalation anesthetic sevoflurane.
Halocarbon has also developed routes to various HFA (hexafluoroacetone) derivatives that possess a HFIP group. These are used to prepare monomers that are used to manufacture photoresists and can also be used to prepare polymers for coatings application. Fluorinated monomers give the finished polymer very unique physical properties such as anti-mar and higher temperature properties.
“There has been a significant increase in the demand for HFIP and other HFIP-related compounds in the last six months,” said Halocarbon Chief Executive Officer Peter Murin. “With the increasing number of end-products that incorporate HFIP, we expect this trend will last for years to come.”
Technology marches forward
As a pioneer in fluorochemistry, Halocarbon continues to work closely with customers to develop and produce unique chemical compounds that drive their business. An example of this is the company’s manufacturing of several difluoro compounds. These compounds have useful applications as intermediates in both pharmaceutical and agrochemical fields. For example chlorodifluoro acetate esters are used as intermediates in the preparation of gemcitabine, which is an important cancer fighting drug.
