Mechanical Seal Barrier Fluids Selection Guide: Not a ‘One-Size Fits All’ Approach

Quality, performance and affordability are just a few of the characteristics of Halocarbon’s industrial lubricants. Over the past 30 years, Halocarbon has grown its specialization in the aerospace and military markets to develop quality specialty lubricants for industrial applications.  Halocarbon Mechanical Seal Barrier Fluids are a new line of fluorinated lubricants designed for use in hazardous or reactive chemical operations. Mechanical seal barrier fluids were engineered to lubricate and cool seal faces in both pressurized and unpressurized systems. Halocarbon Mechanical Seal Barrier Fluids provide safe and long-lasting performance to increase the service life of mechanical seals. Durability is not the only competitive edge of these barrier fluids, as their versatile formulas are designed to benefit a variety of applications.

Halocarbon fluorinated lubricants were designed while keeping the safety of operators and the environment in mind. All fluids are clean, nontoxic, nonflammable, chemically inert, and compatible with most metals, plastics, and elastomers. A corrosion inhibitor is an optional additive to every fluid and can provide additional compatibility with numerous materials and causes no harm to seal faces. Halocarbon oils do not contain oxygen atoms in their structural backbones, providing superior resistance to the effects of powerful Lewis acids.

At Halocarbon it is our goal to develop application-specific solutions – and not to provide a “one size fits all” product.  For this reason, we have developed a portfolio of Mechanical Seal Barrier Fluids by keeping some of the key attributes of seal face performance in mind. This is possible by considering factors that affect the seal such as sliding velocity, operating temperature, and seal-system pressurization. The quality that sets Halocarbon aside from the rest is the variety of lubricants offered to meet these various needs including high velocity barrier fluids, low velocity barrier fluids, and a mechanical seal life-extension fluid.

High Velocity Barrier Fluids (Halocarbon MSHV04 and MSH06)

The hazardous processes of petroleum, natural gas, and chemical production utilize centrifugal and rotary pumps at high rotational velocities ranging from 1200 to 3600 rpms. To ensure safe and reliable operations, Halocarbon engineers have developed two lubricants, Halocarbon MSHV04 and MSHV06, formulated to low viscosities that allow good heat-dissipation and prevent blistering in carbon seal faces. The barrier fluids’ chemically-inert nature is essential in operations involving strong acids or bases, flammable solvents, hydrocarbon, corrosive chemicals, oxidizers and reactive gasses.

Low Velocity Barrier Fluids (Halocarbon MSLV27 and MSLV56)

Mechanical seal barrier fluids are also used to seal rotational equipment that comes in direct contact with reactive chemical processes. The dual and tandem sealing systems for rotary agitators and mixers operate at high temperatures and low velocities ranging from 150 to 300 rpms. Under these conditions, the goal of the barrier fluid is to minimize or entirely prevent the leakage or release of hazardous process fluids. Halocarbon offers two formulas, Halocarbon MSLV27 and MSLV56, which are designed to have moderate viscosities. These viscosities confer leakage prevention and make these fluids suitable for use in high-temperature operations. Additionally, these fluids are chemically inert, making them impervious to Lewis acids, flammable solvents, hydrocarbons, corrosive chemicals, strong oxidizers, and reactive gasses.

Mechanical Seal Life-Extension Fluid (Halocarbon MSXT)

Seal leakage and seal failure during mechanical operations create hazards and disruptions during critical processes. Halocarbon MSXT is a high viscosity fluid designed to slow the rate of barrier and process fluid leakage and is devised to be used with other Halocarbon Mechanical Seal Barrier Fluids. The results of the Halocarbon MSXT are not long-term, but rather provide a temporary solution for plant operators without disruptive and costly operation shutdowns.

Halocarbon is committed to manufacturing high-performing and reliable products because your fluorinated fluid needs drive our market approach. Whether you’re looking for fluids for high or low-velocity rotary seals, we guarantee to deliver long-lasting synthetic fluorinated oils specifically formulated to lubricate and cool mechanical seal faces for every application.
