Oxygen Service

Oxygen services

Oxygen safe lubricants are essential to oxygen systems and services where other synthetic and mineral oils are deemed hazardous. Oxygen safe oils and greases are used to prevent auto ignition, enhance equipment reliability / longevity, and to prevent contamination of the gas.

Halocarbon Fluorinated Oils, Greases, and Waxes are chemically inert and nonflammable lubricants with high thermal stability, high dielectric strengths and low compressibility. These properties deliver unique value across a broad range of demanding environments, making them ideal for oxygen service and processes in oxygen rich environments.

Oxygen Transportation

In transportation, oxygen safe lubricants are critical for 3 different roles:

  • Cylinder/Tank valve stems for rail cars and ISO tank valves to prevent
    ignition under pressure
  • Piping/Fittings between transport units at threaded joints, disconnect fittings,
    and pipe connectors
  • Safety-relief and shut-off valves for trailers and tankers in case of
    emergency

Oxygen safe greases are typically applied throughout these specific systems to maintain safe storage and transportation under pressure, temperature, and chemical exposure.

Halocarbon greases exhibit excellent lubricity and superior chemical resistance – even at cryogenic temperatures – making them uniquely suited in applications involving compression and storage of oxygen gas (O2) and other strong oxidizers.

Hyperbaric chambers

Hyperbaric chambers are typically classified into two categories: hard chambers and soft chambers. Hard chambers are primarily used in medical and naval diving settings, while soft chambers are designed for mobile or emergency use. Despite their differences, both types feature multiple metal-on-metal contact points that require careful lubrication.

In hard chambers, components like door latches and hinges endure frequent mechanical movement during opening and closing. Soft chambers, on the other hand, rely on heavy-duty zippers with metal-on-metal interfaces that also demand reliable lubrication. Internally, both chamber types include valves, actuators, and other oxygen pressurization components that must operate safely and efficiently under high-purity oxygen conditions.

Halocarbon offers two families of lubricants engineered for Hyperbaric applications:

  • Halocarbon PCTFE Oils provide low compressibility, allowing for accurate and repeatable pressure changes in oxygen rich environments. This, most importantly, ensures safety for anyone using or maintaining these chambers.
  • Halocarbon PFPE / PCTFE Greases are inert, non-flammable, and thermally stable, making them excellent for oxygen compression and in oxygen-rich environments.

Oxyacetylene welding

In oxyacetylene welding, lubricants serve two functions – as a sealant and as a lubricant. These oxygen safe lubricants are applied to moving parts such as torch valve stems, control valves actuators, and the gas mixing valves. The sealing property is derived from the lubricants use on any threaded fitting in contact with oxygen. Both these properties are extremely important when dealing with such a pure form of welding, The flame from these torches burn white hot, and the use of a suitable oxygen safe lubricant maintains the longevity of the tool’s life, the quality of the weld, and most importantly, safety of the user.

Halocarbon Oils are compatible with oxygen in liquid and gaseous forms. They are completely inert under high temperatures and pressures. Thanks to these properties, they are an excellent choice as an oxygen-safe lubricant for use in the pumps and delivery systems in oxyacetylene welding.

Halocarbon Greases are also chemically inert and nonflammable, making them
ideally suited for greasing connections and joints—both lubricating and sealing
them against outgassing of oxygen and accidental ignition.

Aerospace Oxygen Delivery Systems

In aerospace systems, oxygen is both essential and dangerous. It is supporting life in cabin pressurization and breathing systems, while posing significant fire and explosion hazards when improperly handled. Every component that interacts with oxygen valves, seals, regulators, compressors must be supported by materials that will not ignite, degrade, or outgas under high pressure, thermal stress, or chemical exposure.

Halocarbon lubricants are uniquely engineered to meet these extreme demands. These lubricants are chemically inert, nonflammable in oxygen environments, and stable across wide temperature ranges, making them mission-critical for maintaining the safety, reliability, and performance of aerospace oxygen delivery systems.

Choosing these lubricants is not just a performance upgrade, it’s a safety imperative.

Medical Oxygen

In medical oxygen systems, the margin for error is zero. The equipment that delivers, stores, compresses, and regulates oxygen must function flawlessly under high pressure, constant cycling, and sterilized conditions, all while remaining safe for patients and medical personnel. Halocarbon lubricants perform exceptionally in these sterile environments where non-flammability and oxygen safety are so crucial.

Halocarbon’s portfolio isn’t just compatible with oxygen; it was designed for it.

Whether it is used in hospital ventilators, oxygen concentrators, or medical oxygen storage systems, these products deliver the gold standard in safety, longevity, and performance. When lives are on the line and oxygen purity matters, Halocarbon lubricants are the trusted choice for hospitals, medical gas suppliers, and oxygen technicians around the world.

Oxygen Production

Whether through cryogenic air separation, pressure swing adsorption, or electrolysis of water, factors such as safety, equipment reliability, and operational efficiency are non-negotiable in industrial oxygen production. Critical components such as bearings, compressors, valves, pumps, seals, and gauges must perform under high pressures, extreme temperatures, and in constant contact with reactive gases like oxygen. In these conditions, even a minor lubricant failure can result in system downtime, equipment damage, or accidental ignition.

To meet these stringent demands, Halocarbon’s comprehensive portfolio provides industry-leading solutions. These lubricants are intrinsically nonflammable, chemically inert, and thermally stable making them specifically engineered for environments where traditional lubricants (e.g., mineral, silicone, or hydrocarbon-based) would pose serious risks.

With over 65 years of fluorochemical expertise, Halocarbon has developed and continually refined products that are safe for use in high-purity oxygen production.
